TALENTED TRIO: St Marys fighters who competed in the Redditch Box Cup over the last two weekends.Lewis Southgate, who won gold on Saturday, with last weeks competitors Bill Eastwood ( silver ) and Joe Hickford gold )

Gold rush continues for Saints!

St Mary’s ABC in Chatham came away from the schools Redditch box cup on Saturday with a 100% success ratio, adding to their medal haul achieved at the same venue last weekend. First in was 13 year old Perry Mulholland, who was up against K. Ali (Eastside, Birmingham). Ali came in with an impressive record of 4 wins in 5 bouts and certainly looked confident during the introductions. However, after putting in hard work to make the under 32kg (under 5 bout) weight class, Perry immediately noticed the difference, as he was clearly bigger than his opponent when they met in the center of the ring. This paid dividends as Mulholland’s natural size and strength allowed him to pin the fast Ali on the ropes several times and land straight combination punches through the middle of his opponents guard. The skillful Ali did have some success, but the judges awarded the bout and gold medal to Mulholland, who stretched his undefeated record to 5 wins, out of 5 bouts and looks a good prospect for next year’s schoolboy championships. Next in for the saint’s was 14 year old Lewis Southgate in the 15+ bouts premier category. After defeating the England number 2 in the last week’s semi-final, all eyes were on the Chatham youngster to impress once again. However, his opponent T. Tovey (Downed, Bristol), seemed content on rushing in and leaning over, which often led to clinches. However, late in the bout Southgate stepped back as the oncoming Tovey came rushing in and picked him with a classy right uppercut, left hook combination, which seemed to tip the bout in Southgate’s favor. Southgate was awarded the win, along with the gold medal and has now won his last 5 bouts in row, which is positive going into the next season. So, over the two weekends at the Redditch box cup, St Marys boxers came away with 3 gold’s, 1 silver and 1 bronze and look forward to sending a larger team next year, with some of their best prospects being a year too young to enter this year.

St marys will be repesented by the very talented Daniel Woledge this week in the prestigious Haringay box cup. Daniel is currently on the great briton development squad, looking to book a place in the forthcoming olympics in Rio in 2016
