St Marys Home Show Results

Date: Wed 9th November 2016

Jason Warner reporting:

Following a successful 2015/16 season that produced three national junior novice champions, 2 NABG champions and an England representative, the young boxers of St Marys abc Chatham were keen to make a winning start at their first home show of the season at Lordswood Leisure centre on Friday 4th November.

In an evening of competitive amateur boxing, full of skill, grit and commitment there were several highlights. After two years out of boxing Claire Gillham returned to score a dominant stoppage win over Rachel Evans of Chelvedon abc. Gilham started at a high tempo with aggressive intent from the opening bell, frequently hurting her opponent who gamely fought back, however midway through the first round, Evans had enough and jumped out of the ring, forcing the referee to stop the bout before the round's end.

The "bout of the night" barnstormer, involved senior home boxer Dimitriy Nachas, who went up against Alfie Winter of Battlebridge abc. In a contest that ebbed and flowed Nachas impressed with his workrate and accuracy on the inside, however Winter skillfully picked off his foe with stinging jabs and crosses on the outside to edge victory by a narrow split decision . Both boxers enjoyed a well deserved standing ovation for their efforts.

English and GB junior champion Karol Itauma took on Scottish champion Lewis Johnstone in an eagerly anticipated rematch of their Tri nations final. The bout had the feel of a main event as both boxers fixed each other with steely glares during the pre-fight preamble bringing an audible rise in tension from the strongly partisan crowd. After three closely contested rounds that saw a mix of classy boxing at distance and ferocious infighting, Itauma took a unanimous points victory and the boxer of the night award.

Robert Caswell lost split points against Michael Stephenson (Trumpington ABC, Cambridge). This was very close but 15 year old Caswell looked to have edged it; however, the judges saw it in the Eastern Counties champions favour.
