St Marys ABC Kent round of National Schoolboy Finals 8 entries 8 winners

Date: Wed 16th January 2013

All Eight St Marys ABC boxers that travelled to Tenterden on saturday January 12th for the Kent round of the national schoolboy championships, returned as Kent champions.

First into the ring for the saints was Billy Eastwood (class 2 under 38kgs). Having joined the club from Brompton ABC just 5 weeks ago weighing 42 kgs, he was carrying some excess weight, so was set the target by the coaches of 38kgs. Through hard work and dedication over christmas he not only made the weight, but defeated the more experienced and fancied Joe Stacey (Swale gloves) who had recently returned from a Box Cup Competition in Sweden where he achieved success against international boxers. After a close first two rounds, Eastwood listened to his cornermens advice and used his newly found fitness and superior workrate to throw enough clean combinations to seal a points victory. A great performance Billy and a warm welcome to the club from all at St Marys.

Next up in class 2 under 52kgs was Tom O'Sullivan, who used his tremedeous height and reach to pick enough clean counters to claim a points win over Jack Beany (Rumbles boxing academy, Sittingbourne).

Joe Tindall (class 2 under 34kgs) could have been forgiven for having a few nerves going into his Kent final against Liam Brum (Sheerness). Not only had he been defeated by Brum at the same stage two years ago, but he had also seen Brum stop his semi final opponent in one round three hours earlier. The strong Brum looked to get close and outwork Tindall, but was often met by quick counters from the fleet footed St Marys boxer. As the bout went on, Brum became increasingly frustrated and Tindall grew in confidence which meant by the final round, Joe was stepping in with his punches more and when Tindall knocked Brum off balance towards the end with a clean right hand, it seemed to cement his supiriority over last years national semi finalist and Tindall was subsequently awarded the judges decision on points.

Also through to the next stage when Kent take on Surrey champions on saturday 19th are Levi Lewis, Joe Hickford, Sam Perfect, Lewis Southgate and Kallum Tindall. All made their weights but there were left without opponents as there was not an opponent of a sufficient standard for their age and weights in Kent, so they recieved the title by walkover.
