Senior Novice Championship Pre 1/4 finals 2013

Date: Sun 3rd November 2013

Oliver Edwards boxed his way into the national senior novice championships last Saturday. The 18 year old was facing previously undefeated boxer Petrit Shemi (Reading) and Edwards was literally facing a tall order as he stepped into the ring, with his Berkshire based opponent having a clear height and reach advantage. However, Edwards is showing more composure with each bout and listened to his coach’s advice of doubling up his jab to get into range and drove his right hand through the middle of his opponents guard several times in the first round. More of the same came early in the second round, until realising the bout was slipping away from him, Shemi decided to make the bout physical in an effort to use his advantages. Although the Reading based man gained some success, he was obviously not happy enough with this as he clearly threw a combination after the bell, for which he was rightly reprimanded by the referee for. Going into the final round, Shemi decided to throw caution to the wind in an effort to claw his way back into the bout, but in the process he left himself open to more clean combinations delivered by Edwards and looked on the brink of receiving a standing count at one point. Edwards was awarded a clear unanimous points win by the judges and is now 1 of the final 8 boxers in the country left in the competition,  when he boxes in the quarter finals in Camberley next sat (Nov 16th). Edwards now has a perfect record of 6 bouts undefeated to date and is beginning to make a name for himself on the southern counties boxing circuit as one to watch. What makes Edwards achievements even bigger is that at 18, he is only just about old enough to enter the senior novices competition, which is open to any novices aged 18-34.
