Recent success

Date: Mon 20th March 2017

"In recent weeks St Mary’s abc Chatham has enjoyed two standout successes in Karol Itauma and Danny Barrett winning junior and senior titles respectively. Keen to build on these achievements, the young boxers of Kent’s most decorated amateur boxing club took centre stage at Lordswood Leisure centre on Saturday 11th March.

In an evening of competitive amateur boxing, full of skill, grit and commitment there were several highlights. Former Youth national champion and Great Britain squad member Daniel Woledge jnr took on Omar Augustine of Earlsfield abc. In a tremendous contest that pitted the experience of Woledge against the youthful tenacity of Augustine, the extra maturity and ring craft of the St Mary’s boxer prevailed. Woledge took a unanimous points decision and Augustine received the “best away boxer of the night” award for his considerable efforts.

In a "bout of the night" barnstormer, home boxer Lee Francis won a unanimous decision against Christian Fortane of Brighton abc. In a contest that ebbed and flowed Fortane impressed with his workrate, however Francis skillfully picked off his foe with stinging jabs and crosses on the outside to take a well-earned victory.

Home boxer of the night George Dawson put on a display of measured aggression in stopping Rhys O’Grady of Hastings abc in the second round of their match. Dawson used his superior strength to push his opponent back and land telling combinations in securing a TKO victory with three standing counts in one round.

In a night in which St Mary’s boxers triumphed in nine out of ten bouts, the biggest winner was the spirit of sportsmanship that characterised every contest. Congratulations to the club on another successful home show.
