November 2017 Homeshow

Date: Thu 23rd November 2017

17/11/2017                             St Mary’s ABC Homeshow

In recent weeks St Mary’s ABC Chatham has enjoyed standout success in the Celtic Box Cup in Ireland with three gold medallists. The first home-show of the season at Lordswood Leisure Centre provided an ideal opportunity to maintain winning habits.

In an evening of competitive amateur boxing, full of skill, grit and commitment there were several highlights. NABC and Celtic Box Cup champion Lewis Southgate of St Mary’s ABC took on Subhaan Ahmed of Dewsbury ABC in an eagerly anticipated rematch. Southgate, out to avenge his previous loss to the Yorkshireman brought pressure and intensity from the outset however an undeterred Ahmed kept his composure to pick shots on the outside. The third and final round saw no quarter given as both boxers engaged in a roof raising, toe to toe war. In the heat of battle Southgate raised his energy levels to end the bout on top with sustained assaults to the body. Three rounds of intense action couldn’t separate the boxers so the outcome rested on the three ringside judges who awarded the contest to Ahmed. Although the home crowd were left disappointed, Southgate and Ahmed should be proud of their performances. The contest was a clear “bout of the night” winner and Southgate took home the “boxer of the night” trophy.

In other action, St Mary’s own power punching dynamo Claire Gilham dominated a game but outgunned Farah Choudhary of Watford ABC. Gilham seemed intent on ending the contest inside the distance as she went about her work with bad intentions, Choudhary survived and had her own successes as Gilham began to tire down the stretch. Gilham won by a convincing unanimous decision.

In a night in which St Mary’s boxers triumphed in 7 out of 10 bouts, the biggest winner was the spirit of sportsmanship that characterised every contest. Congratulations to the club on another successful home show.

In the South East regional finals on Sunday, Dion Eede won on points against Wiffen of Sudbury, But both Lewis Southgate and Sam Dawson lost razor thin split points decisions against Essex champions and on another day, both would have got the verdict.

Eede joins the three other St Marys against the London champions this Sunday in Dagenham Karol Itauma, Jacey Birch and Ronnie Murray in the national quarter finals.
