More success

Date: Thu 8th March 2018

St Marys had two boxers in action at the Southern counties finals in Hastings on Sunday March 4th.

14 year old Luke Carter was first up in the jnr cadet under 44kgs category against the more experienced C. Rennie (Poseidon ABC, Southampton). Having lost a questionable split decision in his last bout, Carter came out looking to assert his dominance from the start. Although he scored some good combinations, the taller Rennie managed to land his fair share in an even 1st round. Despite conceding over double bouts experience, Carter upped his workrate and edged out Rennie in a split points decision. It was a very good scalp for Carter, who's coaches are very impressed with his improvements in his short 2 year career so far.

Next up was 19 year old Lewis Southgate in his first senior contest in the under 56kgs Intermediate senior southern counties final. Up against a taller, older H. Notter (Leigh Park ABC, Portsmouth), it was clear Southgate would have to work his way inside the longer reach of Notter. Boxing for the first time wiithout a headguard, Southgate could have been forgiven for a having a few nerves. Southgate put his combinations together well in the first round and managed to score a flash knockdown along the way.
Into the second, Notter tried to keep Southgate at Bay with his straight punches, but Southgate was now into his groove and pinned Notter to the ropes with head shots, before dropping him with a well timed left hook to the ribcage. After sensing his thin opponent had a weakness for body punches, Southgate moved back in after the count, threw a couple more head punches, before letting go with a massive left hook just under the bottom rib. Notter dropped and couldn't recover before being counted out and handing Southgate his first senior title. Southgate is now preparing to enter the senior elite championships later in march.

Carter, now joins clubmates Ronnie Murray and Dion Eede (who had walkovers in the regional finals) in the national quarter finals against the champions of the Western counties the weekend of 16th-17th March.
