Itauma selected to box for England

Date: Tue 17th May 2016

17 year old St Marys boxer Danny Sanders was in action on the Newham BC show in East London last Friday night. According to coach Dan Woledge snr, Sanders West Ham BC opponent made a very fast start and forced a standing count in the first round. However, Sanders dug in and came back into the bout in a very close second round. By the third round, it was Sanders who was having the better of the exchanges and damaged his West Ham BC opponents nose so much so that the referee had to stop the contest several times to wipe the blood away. Dan Woledge said that Sanders may have given his opponent a count or forced a stoppage if the referee hadn't given him respite. In a cracking contest it must have come down to the count Sanders received in the first round as he lost on points.

On Saturday night the St Marys seniors had Danny Barrett in action. Barrett again won on his travels as he beat his opponent from Moolscombe BC in Brighton on points. According to coach Matt Bowler, Southpaw Barrett boxed well to beat his opponent in front of his home fans. These bouts kept  both St Marys boxers busy in the run up to them entering the Haringey box cup competition in mid June.

Fresh from his assessment camp at GB headquarters, 15 year old St Marys boxer  Karol Itauma received some great news...He has been selected to represent England at the European junior Boxing championships in Hungary (18th-26th June). I'm pretty sure Karol has made history as I don't think anyone has ever been selected to go to such a prestigious competition within just within 18months of boxing!  The 15 year old only stepped foot in a boxing gym two years ago and had his first bout on the St Marys show in November 2014. Since then, the Chatham based boxer has won 4 National titles and the Tri Nations Gold medal two weeks ago. He listens and tries to put into practise all we tell him. He is always polite and just gets on with his training. A lot of boxers could be forgiven for getting a bit big headed after so much success so quickly, but so far he is just taking it all in his stride. The Greenacre schools students is coached by Dan Woledge, Dave Bowler and Jerome Xavier. We are all so proud of his achievements so far and if he continues to keep his head down and train hard, who knows how far he can go.
