Egyptian Olympic Boxing Team Train at St Mary’s ABC

Date: Sat 14th July 2012

Medway Council’s Mike Evens negotiated with Marcus Bell and Simon Tindall at St Mary’s on a package to help accommodate the Olympic 5 from Egypt. The club was used to host training and sparring sessions for a two week period, inviting local Kent Boxers to attend.

The Medway boxing clubs, as well as London, Surrey. Hampshire, Essex and Birmingham all attended St Marys and had the experience of training with Olympians. Their presence was a key part of the success of the program. Our very own Youseff Kamel, a young Boxer at the club, acted as an interpreter and helped make the Olympic Team feel at home.

We were kindly invited to the official Olympic welcoming meeting and with Youseff, had the opportunity to meet new people within the community and to get feedback on the progress of St Marys and the future direction of the club. We were also invited to discuss further advice and help from Medway Police, Councillors and magistrate offenders programs to name but a few. So after one year, the club’s future looks brighter and further away from the threat of closure.
