Caswell marches on

Date: Wed 7th December 2016

St Marys have two boxers through to the National NABCG finals, where Welsh opponents await them. Last Sunday Dec 4th, two more were hoping to join them as they were in action in the semi finals at Harlow dog track. First up in the Class B under 46kg was Lordswood based Robert Caswell. The 16 year old had been on the wrong end of a few split decision losses and was up against A. Davies (Gwent, Wales). the taller Caswell stuck to  the game plan immediately started landing clean jabs against the shorter and stockier Welsh boxer. Caswell kept a tighter guard than usual and  when Davies tried to pressure him, he tucked up and fired back with clean uppercuts. Caswell clearly won the first 2 rounds, but in the past Robert had panicked under pressure, so was not out of the woods as Davies was sent out for a big third round. However, Robert came of age and rolled with the punches, stayed off the ropes and again dominated with superior speed of hand and foot. It was the best Caswell had ever boxed and he has showed that hard work and sticking it out after losses have paid off as he booked his place in the final by a unanimous decision.

Next up for St Marys was 18 year old Clare Gillham, after 2 explosive stoppage wins since returning to boxing after 2 years out, she came off second best against Elizabeth Bools (Trowbridge, Western counties). Gillham gave a good effort but conceding over double experience to the reigning champion from the west country was a bridge too far and the bout was stopped in the 3rd round. It wasn't stopped before Bools had to shake off some big punches herself and knew she had been in a boxing match by the end of the class c under 51kgs match. Gillham was back in the gym training the next evening, which is a good sign that she is ready to learn from mistakes and move on.
