3 out of 3 and onto the semi's

Date: Tue 20th March 2018

On Saturday two St Mary’s boxers were competing in the quarter finals of the England Boxing Junior Championships, they were taking place at Broad Plain Boxing club Bristol. First up for St Mary’s was Luke Carter in the under 44kg category, his opponent was Keiron Dunford from Barton Hill. Both boxers got off to a fast start in the first round landing clean shots, after they settled down Luke started to find his range with his jab and finished the round strong. In the second round Luke continued to use his jab effectively and started to increase the pressure at close range. The third round was much the same, Luke’s work rate increased and you could see the difference in fitness levels as the Barton Hill boxer started to fade after the first minute. Luke went on to win by unanimous points decision.

Dion Ede was also competing for a place in the Semi finals and was up against Tyler Cooper from Arena Boxing Club. Dion started well landing some good combinations and used his footwork well to avoid his opponents counter punches. In the second Dion slowed the pace down and was more static which allowed Cooper to land some heavy counter punches, despite this he managed to stay one step ahead of the Arena boxer and secured the points win by a split decision from the judges. Dion had been ill leading up to the bout and we only made a decision to allow him to box on the Saturday morning, taking that into considering this was a fantastic result for him and a testament to his dedication to the sport.

Both boxers along with Ronnie Murray who received a walkover are through to the Semi Finals, they are being held in the Magna Arena, Rotherham on Saturday 24th March and if successful will box in the finals at the same venue on Sunday.

Elsewhere in High Wycombe on Saturday 17th, 12 year old Jesse Harris boxed on the High Wycombe club show. Harris could have been forgiven for having a few nerves beforehand, up against the home boxer P. Stokes, who was of Irish origin on St Patricks day! Harris listened to the corners advice to keep the shorter Stokes at bay with straight punches and midway through the 2nd round the oncoming stokes walked onto a perfect 1-2 combination that knocked him down. More of the same in the 3rd and a standing count was followed by the referee stopping the contest in Jesse's favour, to give the St Marys boxer the win.
