2 more in the semis

Date: Wed 30th May 2018

Mason Mateer and Robbie Kearns were both bidding to join their 2 St Marys clubmates Tyrone Clarke and Jesse Harris in the finals of the National schoolboys championships. Clarkes semi final opponent withdrew the day before and Harris had no opponent of suitable standard so recieved a walkover.

11 year old Mateer was up against A. Smith from Repton ABC, London. Both 11 year olds were undefeated and something had to give in the minors under 35.5kgs category. Smith was busier in the first round and the second round could have gone either way. The third round saw Mateers workrate improve and pushed Smith back to take the round. It was very close, but Smith was awarded the points decision and place in the final.

Next up was 12 year old Robbie Kearns in the class A under 50kgs category. Up against a more experienced opponent from Islington ABC, London. Receiving walkovers whilst his opponent had boxed his way through seemed to affect Kearns as he looked a bit ring rusty and struggled to get his range to land.  Neither boxer dominated a cagey affair, but after 3 rounds, the London champion was awarded a split points decision.

Both boxers will have to dust themselves off and get back into training as they prepare to be part of a massive 14 boxer team going to the Hull box cup June 1st-3rd.

Still flying the St Marys flag high in the National schoolboy on sat 26th May in Grantham is reining national minors champion Tyrone Clarke and Jesse Harris. Both will be hoping to bring titles back to Medway.
